Lyme Disease Warning Issued

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Watch out for deer ticks this holiday weekend -- and be sure to check yourself if you're spending any time outdoors.

A researcher from the University of Rhode Island warns the population of deer ticks is up 30 percent from this time last year.

Thomas Mather of URI says the high number of deer ticks going into the July Fourth holiday weekend means the risk of contracting Lyme disease will extend further into the summer than usual.

Mather recommends that people check themselves thoroughly once a day, apply an insect repellant containing Permethrin, keep the edge of the yard clear of leaf litter, and hire a professional to apply a tick treatment in the yard.
